Imported Food Safety Management Act

Imported Food Safety Management Act (abbreviated as IFSMA) [Enforcement on June 14, 2024] [Law No. 19471, Partial Amendment on June 13, 2023]

  1. Purpose: This Act aims to ensure the safety of imported foods, promote quality improvement, and contribute to maintaining a healthy trading order and enhancing public health by providing accurate information.
  2. History: The Imported Food Safety Management Act was enacted on March 23, 2016. This law was introduced to strengthen the safety and quality of imported foods in South Korea, emphasizing enhanced supervision, inspection, and regulations of imported foods to protect consumer health.
  3. Key Points:

       1) Mandatory pre-registration of overseas manufacturing facilities

       2) Strengthening on-site inspections of overseas manufacturing facilities 

       3) Implementation of imported livestock hygiene assessment and overseas facility registration system

       4) Integration and establishment of businesses related to imported foods

       5) Differential management of operators and products
