What are the types of sugar alcohols according to domestic regulations?

I have learned that there are many inquiries about which sugar alcohols are designated according to domestic regulations. Therefore, today I would like to inform you where to check the types of sugar alcohols.

The information below is based on inquiries made to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The substances listed are primarily included in the Food Additive Code, but the enumeration of types is found in the Food Labeling Act.

Related Regulations:

  1. According to the Enforcement Rules of the Food Labeling Act, it states that products containing 10% or more of sugar alcohols (e.g., lactitol, mannitol, D-maltitol, D-sorbitol, erythritol, isomalt, xylitol, polyglycitol syrup, maltitol syrup, D-sorbitol solution, etc.) must label “sugar alcohol” and the type and content in parentheses. For example, "Sugar alcohol (D-sorbitol 4%, D-maltitol 10%)" and include a warning stating that "excessive consumption may cause diarrhea."
  2. Products that utilize sugar alcohols as primary ingredients must also indicate the type and content of the sugar alcohols and a warning that "excessive consumption may cause diarrhea."
  3. Generally, "sugar alcohols" refer to a group of substances where the carbonyl group of sugars is converted into hydroxyl groups.

Considerations:

When using sugar alcohols in products, it is essential to include the warning "may cause diarrhea if consumed in excess" on the label. For clarity on whether specific sugar alcohols can be used domestically, it is advised to consult the MFDS before proceeding with imports or domestic product manufacturing reports, as some sugar alcohols allowed abroad may not be permitted in the country.
