HFF (Health Functional Foods) Labeling

Standards for Labeling of Health Functional Foods [MFDS Notice No. 2023-9, February 8, 2023]

  1. Purpose: This notice establishes the standards for contents and methods of labeling health functional foods in accordance with Article 4 and Article 5 of the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, as well as Article 5(3) and Article 6(4) of the Enforcement Rules of the same Act. The aim is to promote the quality improvement of health functional foods and provide accurate information to consumers.
  2. Main Content: The labeling standards for health functional foods are crucial to ensure that consumers can accurately understand product information. The labeling and standards are regulations designed to ensure that these products are used safely and appropriately. Below are the main contents regarding the labeling standards for health functional foods.

       1) Product Name

           The name used should clearly indicate that it is a health functional food.

           The product name must include the phrase "Health Functional Food."

       2) Functional Ingredients and Related Components

           The functional ingredients included in the product and their amounts must be clearly indicated.

           The specific functions that these ingredients have should be explained.

       3) Manufacturer and Date of Manufacture

           The name, address, and contact information of the manufacturer must be stated.

           The date of manufacture and the expiration date or period of use must be specified.

       4) Directions for Use

           Specific guidance on appropriate intake amount and method of consumption should be provided.

           Precautions to be taken while consuming the product should also be included.

       5) Storage Method

           Detailed instructions on how to store the product must be provided.

           For example, guidelines such as "keep away from direct sunlight and store in a cool place" should be included.

       6) Precautions

           Precautions, including potential issues from excessive consumption, should be clearly stated.

           Information should be provided on specific diseases or conditions that may contraindicate the use of the product.

       7) Nutritional Information

           The main nutrients included in the product and their amounts must be specified.

           The amounts of calories, protein, fat, sugar, vitamins, and minerals should be indicated.

       8) Quality Certification and Test Results

           Quality certificates or test results of the product can be attached or information about them can be provided.

       9) Other Labeling

           The presence of any GMO (genetically modified organisms) ingredients must be indicated.

           Information about allergens contained in the product should be included.

   

   3. Legal Basis and Managing Authority

       1) Legal Basis: The standards for labeling health functional foods are established and managed based on the Health Functional Food Act and related regulations.

       2) Managing Authority: The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) manages and supervises the standards for labeling health functional foods. If necessary, the regulations are revised and related laws are supplemented to enhance consumer protection.

 

   4. Latest Trends

       1) Enhancement of Transparency: Providing more detailed and transparent information is emphasized to ensure consumer rights and safety.

       2) Digital Labeling: Digital labeling using QR codes is being introduced, allowing consumers easier access to more information.

       3) Eco-Friendly Packaging: There is an increasing demand for eco-friendly packaging and labeling to protect the environment.
